Loons on Nest

On Saturday, May 9 a loon was observed sitting on the nest in the late morning.  It had not been sitting on the nest before that time.  On Sunday evening the loon was still on the nest but many flies were observed on and around it’s head.  Late morning Monday, May 11 a loon was still on the nest but no flies were observed, perhaps due to temperatures being cooler.  Hopefully the loons can tolerate the flies this season.

Fish Stocking Program

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has approved a six year fish stocking program for Moon Lake, beginning in May, 2015. This program calls for the planting of up to 4600 splake to be planted each year through the end of 2020. Splake is a hybrid cross between a brook trout and a lake trout, is fairly easy to catch, and is a tasty treat to eat. The DNR document reviewing this program is located in the tab labeled “Fish Management” which is the far right tab on the main page. The document includes some interesting historical information about Moon Lake.

Many thanks go to John Sick and Dale Sharpee for working with the DNR to get this program initiated.
