MLSA Michigan Lake and Stream Asscoiation

Jim Reiels passed along a newsletter from MLSA and suggested that we publish it on our web site.  Instead of us publishing their newsletter, contact information for MLSA will be put under the “Protect Our Lake” tab.  All the newsletters as well as much more information is on their site,   www.mymlsa.org

Briefly, here is some information about MLSA:

Michigan Lake and Stream Associations, Inc. is a non-profit, state-wide organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and wise management of Michigan’s vast treasure of inland lakes and streams. We achieve our mission by supporting riparian associations as well as the collective and individual educational, stewardship and conservation initiatives of our members which include lake and stream associations, concerned citizens, commercial and non-profit businesses as well as our public and private collaborative partners.

More Loon Information

Mike Meyer of WDNR  responded with the following information:  “Chicks of that age have been documented to be taken by eagle predation, aquatic predators such as snapping turtles, pike, and bass, other loons, and disease.  Siblicide also occurs, as we have documented fighting amongst even very small loon chicks.  We lose 15-25% of chicks between hatch and fledging each year so the observation on Moon Lake is not that unusual.”
