Loon Update 6/6/2012

Today we confirmed that one of the loon chicks has disappeared.  Yesterday one of the residents reported that she saw the 2 adults but only one chick.  This morning we saw both adults dive and leave only 1 chick on the surface so it appears that something has happened to one of them.  No one has reported any unusual activity so we have no idea what might have happened.  We will ask Mike Meyer of Wisconsin DNR if he has any ideas of the likely cause.  Here are 2 photos of the family this morning.  The chick has grown tremendously in the last few days.

Loon Chicks 1 week Old

The loon chicks have made it through their first week and appear to be doing well.  They have already left the security of the south end of the lake and are being escorted around the lake by their parents.  The photo shows them at the north end of the lake.

Please remember when you or your guests are on the lake to watch for the loons and give them plenty of room.  The chicks cannot dive at this age and it will be several weeks until they can dive  deep enough to escape a fast moving boat or other watercraft.
