As of this morning the loon family appears to be doing well (see photo). The chick is almost a month old and is learning to dive and, hopefully, fish. Be sure to look out for the loons when you are on the lake. The adults are starting to leave the chick alone, and it is very hard to see when it does not have an adult nearby. That dull brown color is part of their survival strategy because it makes them less visible from the air–think eagles. That makes them more difficult to see from a boat or jet ski, so please watch for them.
