Moon Lake Loons Spring? 2011

Last spring the ice was out on March 31; however, the first loon did not arrive until April 9.  It was unusual to see the lake open without loons for over a week.  This year loons were heard several times flying over the lake starting in mid-April, but the lake was still completely frozen.  A pair of loons probably arrived late on April 25 with ice still covering much of the lake.  By the morning of April 26, most of the north end of the lake was open; and the loons have been making their rounds since then.  Early indications are that the loon pair is “our” loons who have successfully produced chicks in the past.  They were greeted on April 26 by a mature bald eagle making a low pass over them, and on the morning of April 27 by an immature Trumpeter swan on the lake.
