Ice Out!

For the past few days it has seemed that surely the ice would surely be off tomorrow.  Finally today, Frank Kuchevar, out official ice observer, has declared that the ice is completely off the lake.  The ice went out first on the north end of the lake except for a small area on the northeast side.  The last ice on the south end of the lake was in the back bay until the 29th when a south wind moved the ice out of the bay into the main body of the lake.   Yesterday was a beautiful day but the weather has largely been miserable for some time so seeing the lake open is a welcome site.

The Loons are back.   Tom and Linda Wheeler will be keeping us updated on the Moon Lake Loons.  Please click on the “Loons” tab for this years first Loon report.

We have had ducks on the lake since there was open water near the shore of the lake.  A Blue Heron showed himself on the 27th and has been here daily.

We are not sure why, but we have great news on the water level on the lake.  Our gage measured 2.08 feet when ice was forming last fall/winter and today at ice out the reading is 2.79 feet, a gain of 8.5 inches of water level over winter.  Since ice out in 2010 we have gained over 19 inches of water.
