2 Loon Chicks on the Lake

We had a call this morning from a lake resident who lives near the loon platform reporting a loon chick.  We hopped in our boat and went down the lake, and sure enough there were the adults and 1 chick by the buoys.  We watched for a while, and all at once a head appeared between the wings on the back of one of the adults.  As we watched, the freeloading chick finally entered the water and we took some photos.  One of the chicks was very aggressive towards the other chick–something we have not seen before from such young chicks.  Here are a couple of photographs.

Loon on Nest

As of May 24, 2013, we have loons nesting on the platform.  At least 1 egg is in the nest.  They started nesting on May 22, 2013, so assuming the first egg was laid within a day or so, the first hatch should be around June 28 so there should be young chicks before the 4th of July.

We put the buoys out across the bay this morning.  Please  stay on the lake side of the buoys and remind guests to stay at least 200 feet from loons they may encounter around the lake.
