Spring Update

It has been an interesting spring.  It seemed like winter would never end but an early May warm-up changed things.  Near the end of April we had nearly 2 feet of ice but the lake opened up May 7.  On Memorial Day the water temperature 2 feet under the surface at the end of my dock was 72 degrees.  John Reiels provided the picture below a day before total ice out.  Some ice is visible in the photo.

John also provided a sunset and a “moon over moon” photo.  See below

Lake Level Data  Last fall we reported the lake level at ice on was 5.97 feet.  The gage was nearly under water with the only the number “6” visible and it was incorrectly assumed that number was for 6.00 feet when in fact the maximum reading on the gage  is 5.60 feet.  Therefore the actual lake level at ice over last wall was 5.57 feet.  At ice off on May 7 this spring the level was 4.45 feet, a bit of a surprise with all the snow we had last winter.  The level on Memorial Day was 5.54 feet.

Loons  Those of you who have viewed the web cam know the loons are sitting on eggs.  The first egg was laid on May 20 and a second egg was laid on the 24th.  There were many Loon Black Flies initially and the loons were off the nest more than they normally would have been.  There are many less flies now and the loons are on the nest as usual.
